After the success of Team GB at the Olympics of 2012, the Government committed a significant sum of money to ensuring high quality PE begins young. All children should lead active and healthy lives and, even is this isn’t present in their home lives, it should heavily influence their experiences in school. The Childhood Obesity Plan says that at least 30 minutes of daily activity should take place in schools and this will contribute to the daily 60 minutes of ‘moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity’ recommended by the UK Chief Medical Officer.
Primary school PE and sport participation is especially important; in the Early Years, we are still assessing children’s physical development robustly as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. As children move through the school, their own perception of themselves as active citizens is formed.
